Sadly, the retail shop Space has closed after less than a year. It’s actually been shut down for at least a month now, but there was talk about keeping in going under a new framework.
I’m told now, however, that it’s simply shut down for good. Artists consigning their goods are waiting to get their pieces back. (Or they were … see the comment.)
Space was great while it lasted, but retail’s a tough game. Trying to sell art, handcrafted goods and decor in a still-evolving place like Bijou Square is even tougher. I get my hair cut there often, and maybe even (ahem) a hint of color. I buy my wines from the wine shop there. The dry cleaners has its racks filled with garments. The sandwich shop and restaurant are closer and closer to a grand opening. But except for the wine shop, those are services, things that Amazon and Etsy can’t replace. The Net hasn’t forced any liquor shops to close either, probably because of shipping regs. But I respect the attempt to bring a high-end, artistic-minded place like Space in town, and I’m sad to see it go.
