The Charles Apple Blog today reminds us about Walt Kelly, who started out his cartooning life at the Bridgeport Post as a reporter covering the Welfare Department during the Great Depresion. He also drew cartoons about our most famous mayor, P.T. Barnum.
I don’t draw anymore, and considering the shrinking pool of American editorial cartoonists, I have a better chance of being ambassador to Spain than I do paying my bills with ink and Bristol board. But times were different when Walt Kelly was in the building. He went on to work for Disney, and then returned to the East Coast to work at the New York Star, where “Pogo” was born. The rest is history.
