The Bridgeport Arts & Cultural Council has one question to ask: “Paper or Plastic?”
That’s the name of its next show at the Arcade. Curated by Terri C. Smith and Eileen Walsh, the show opens Thursday, March 3 from 5-7 p.m.
The show is a commentary on consumer culture. Artists include: William Corprew, Mark DeRosa, Diane DiMassa, Jahmane, Richard Killeaney, Marcella Kovac, Philip Lique, Alan Neider and Rita Valley.
Everything from a historic figure to an ecosystem can be branded, it is noted in publicity on the show. Jahmane’s MLBK JR and MALCOLM EXXON are two particularly sardonic images.
Marcella Kovac rebrands found artworks with stenciled letters. A seaside paintings is defaced with the word “Porn” — a juxtaposition we are told represents the human desire to capture, possess and objectify beauty – whether the female figure or a picturesque landscape.
The show runs until Friday, April 8.
