The “Coming Out” art show that had been planned for this coming Sunday has been canceled for lack of interest.
“Unfortunately, we did not have enough participation to move forward with this event and therefore are forced to cancel,” read a message sent out this morning.
I’m left to wonder why. Have “coming out” stories become a big yawn?
Perhaps the theme is a little too stuck in the 1990s, when everyone’s “when I came out of the closet” memories had their moment in literature and film. “Outing” was a hot topic, and a thick glossy came out with the title “Out.” This show would have been a hit in the Silence=Death era when gay visibility was a huge crusade.
Or maybe artists don’t want to be “gay artists” or “out artists,” but simply good artists.
