It’s only 73 days away people!
Paul Wallen of the Hunstville Times is among the more than 40 presenters
at the workshop. He’s working on a presentation titled, “Don’t Give Up, Word
Up!” with compelling case studies of great work produced from limited visual
elements. A few questions for Paul:
SND: If you were getting out of college today, with the skills you have,
how would you pursue a career in journalism?
Wallen: Versatility is critically important, so my advice to students
graduating now is to develop a base set of skills in as many areas as you
can. Whether we agree with the direction or not, it’s clear that newsrooms
are becoming less specialized due to economic pressures and management
strategies. The more different things you can do well, the more attractive
you will be to prospective employers and the more job security you will have
once you are hired.
SND: What will I get from attending the SND workshop in person, as opposed
to just following the blogging or skipping it?
Wallen: More than ever, this workshop will be about putting ideas and
tools in attendees’ hands that they can take back to their newsrooms and use
right away. Attending in person will allow you to interact with speakers and
other attendees. It’s an opportunity for us all to ask questions, learn from
each other, feed off each other’s energy and return home not only inspired
but with some practical ideas on how to improve what we do on a daily basis.
