I was trying to gather some information for the newspaper and found some old ads from the mid-1950s in the last years of the Ricky Ricardo-type nightclub. The Cedarbrook was one of them, apparently.
I also found “want ads” for waitresses and cooks, two jobs “The Brook” hasn’t advertised for in ages.
Also in the archives, from the same time frame, was a short article on July Bowe, the proprietor, charged with serving minors, and another (with coded language thrown in) about Edward Bowe, her husband I guess, caught up in a brawl.
The Cedarbrook reinvented itself many times since 1939 — bohemian roadhouse, suburban nightclub, drag show and stripper-nite venue, dance club, karaoke dive, Latin music spot — and it’s been on borrowed time for years. It’s sad to see Westport, as well as the gay community, losing yet one more bit of history.
