Yes, we ran the same cover twice! How did that happen?
Oh, wait. I do see small differences. You have to look closely. The one in the second cover doesn’t have the great hair and he’s not holding a microphone.
But seriously folks, I think both covers kind of rock, and do a good job of attracting readers, and advertisers, who we’re trying to impress as the best source for this kind of information.
Designer Daryn Rowley did both of these, and actually I’m really pleased with her work. She’s a teriffic designer with a fine-art sensibility (actually, I should say fine-art ability.)
When we started producing the Go tabloid to replace our Thursday Preview section, we were a little nervous about our ability to add a small magazine to our weekly duties. This was something we had to simply absorb into our schedules with no additional staffing or budget.
Most of the photography is handed out by publicists, the main exception being the Dining page, which calls on our news photographers to become food stylists — and they pull it off, too. Something you might not appreciate until you realize how unphotogenic a plate of beef or pork really is.
Then, for the May redesign, I tweaked the elements, removing the geegaws and yellow/red signature rules. Our new font set, from Font Bureau, made designing a new logo a pleasure. I love the sculptural qualities of the lower-case “g.”
Of all the feedback we’ve gotten on the redesign, no one really mentions the fonts directly, but when they say they love the overall look and find it more “readable,” I have to say our font choices were validated. Especially since we’re able to carry over our A1 elements all the way over to Go each Thursday.
