Could it have helped that my good mood following my Art to the Avenue trip followed catching a big markdown at Simon Pearce? An alpaca throw on got reduced another $25 right before my eyes. Now I have to just hope the moths don’t find it before fall.
That’s the store that displayed works from one of the most extraordinary artists who took part in the event, Frances B. Ashforth.
I’m normally skeptical about the whole big-paint-strokes-of-sky-and-horizon thing, but darn if this artist doesn’t layer in the colors and details so beautifully. And her work was suited to the Simon Pearce aesthetic, its crystal and pottery, all at once simple and beautifully constructed and revealing the elegance of any piece that’s unembellished and intelligently conceived.
That was the first exhibit we saw when we arrived to Greenwich Avenue, and what a good start that was.
