The Apple blog posted this story yesterday, and I immediately commented that I thought they should keep this look all year long. The Baltimore Sun celebrated an off-year anniversary by resurrecting their original nameplate.
I’ve changed my mind. I think they should go back to it permanently. What a cool nameplate. Pretty edgy, even kinky. Suddenly the new flag looks a little too polished and bland.
I went back to our original nameplates at the group of dailies I work for, and none of them convey this strength or character. In fact, when we did our recent redesign, we pored through our archives looking for something iconic that represented our heritage. Nothing. Most papers started out in the 1800s looking pretty much the same.
Maybe someone will start a Facebook campaign to restore the original flag.
