I’m almost embarrassed to admit this, but we really splurged this month. We commissioned art, from an artist, and we’re paying a pretty decent fee too.
It’s been years.
I used to spend seven to nine thousand dollars a month for art. I loved it! I felt like a regular Peggy Guggenheim, choosing some lucky illustrator out of the Workbook (do those still exist?) and approving big checks for illustrations. Some were really beautiful, too. I would have framed some, if I could have, and hung them in my dining room.
This time around, I had almost forgot how to talk to an artist. The whole give-and-take. Communicating clearly on your expectations. Communicating clearly your thoughts after getting that first draft. Having the nerve to ask for revisions a fourth time.
Has anyone else finally gotten the chance to hire an artist for something, after years of relying on stock, or maybe your own scribbles? Let’s talk. Is your art budget showing signs of a comeback too?
