When I arrived at the City Lights Gallery last evening, I was a little bummed to find someone was apparently changing their oil filter right in front of the gallery. Or maybe one of the starving artists had a breakdown. Markle Court isn’t the worst street in town, but it’s still easy to imagine someone disrupting a gallery opening like this.
I was relieved to find that the car was actually part of the exbibit. The car was James Boncek’s 1993 Toyota Tercel, the combustion engine removed and replaced with batteries. It runs just fine, he says.
This was the gallery’s annual “Recycled” show, in which works are put together with any kind of used objects — or even food items, in one case — in an artful way.
