Do you like Berlin?
Not the ’80s new wave band. Not the farmer’s market in New Jersey. Berlin, Germany.
Why do I ask? It’s been floated as a possible 2012 annual conference site.
St. Louis is already set for 2011. Then we’d be meeting an in overseas destination as we did in 2009. That makes it less accessible for many of us in the U.S., but a lot more accessible for our European counterparts.
Most of us would have to fly to even a domestic conference. The most recent conferences I remember were in Houston, Orlando. Boston, Las Vegas (which was the exact opposite of Boston), Buenos Aires, then the one coming up in Denver, and then in Missouri. Only one was in driving distance for me.
Then there’s the expense. The Euro isn’t terribly inviting to American, but for many of us travel abroad is, and lots of the expense will be tax deductible as business related. (Consult your accountant to verify that.) I’ve come to enjoy purpose-driven travel. It would never have occurred to me to travel to Argentina last year, and I’m so glad I did. Memories of that, in and out of the conference, will last a lifetime. Still, it kind of broke the bank, and Germany will be out of reach for many SND members, or the destination won’t be considered all that alluring for the effort involved.
A formal proposal might be made at the fall meeting. Meanwhile, we have six months to mull this over.
